What to Do When You’re Bored at Home

Figuring out how to stay entertained if you’re bored with life can prove somewhat of a challenge, especially with lockdown. Heading out to the movies, going shopping, or even taking a trip round to a friend’s house for a coffee is no longer an option according to government health advice, and unfortunately, this is set to be the case for the next month at least.

With our options for keeping occupied so limited, it’s not going to be long before boredom hits. There is only so much time you can spend watching Netflix or playing with the dog before you will be left scratching your head at what to do next. That’s why we have put together this helpful list of ideas that you can try to help you beat the boredom when you’re at a loose end at home this summer.

Things to Do When You’re Bored at Home Alone

For those of us who live alone, having our freedom to leave the house when we want is especially difficult. If you’re in this situation, don’t despair – here are a few things you might want to do to kill a few hours.

reading books is a good hobby when at home

Opening a book is like stepping into another world. There is a certain degree of freedom that comes from being able to learn and experience the thoughts and feelings of the characters in a novel.

There has never been a better time than now to pick up that dusty paperback that you’ve been meaning to get into for months but always seem to find an excuse not to read.

Listen to Music

Being stuck indoors for extended periods of time will result in cabin fever before too long. When you start to lurch toward temporary insanity, listening to music will offer some release. A great way to burn off some energy if you’re feeling like a caged animal is to stick on your favorite album and dance around the living room. Just make sure the neighbors can’t see!

Watch YouTube Videos

Sometimes it seems as if YouTube was created for moments like these. Whether you feel like watching the latest cute cat videos, feasting your eyes on travel videos or belly-laughing at skateboard bails, the weird and wonderful world of online videos is enough to keep even the most restless of minds occupied for hours on end.

Learn a New Skill

Part of the frustration of being at home for long periods is that you can start to feel like you’re stagnating. Take advantage of the extra time you have at home to learn a new skill. Pick up that old guitar and find some online lessons or choose from the incredible range of language-learning tools at your fingertips on the internet.

Fun Things to Do When Bored at Home with Kids

For those of us lucky enough to be blessed with kids, there are tons of options for things to do which don’t require leaving the house.

There is little that small children get a kick out of more than making things. Get out any craft materials that have been hiding in your cupboard for months and give them a free rein to express their creativity to the max.

Who knows? You might even end up enjoying the sense of accomplishment too!

The art of completing a jigsaw puzzle is something that fewer and fewer kids have the chance to appreciate in the age of videogames and social media.

As a joint project that is usually completed over numerous sittings in the space of a couple of days, doing a jigsaw puzzle is something fun that teaches kids the virtue of patience and perseverance.

Board Game

There is hardly a better way to spend an evening indoors than playing a board game. Whether it is the raucous money-making in a classic like Monopoly or the strategic thinking of a game like chess, your kids will love the opportunity to give air to their competitive side.

Just make sure that you don’t let your own competitiveness get out of control.

Cook a Meal Together

One positive thing that has come from being indoors more is that we have more time to eat as a family and cook a meal together.

Why not take the opportunity, then, to go the extra mile and cook something fancy? Kids usually relish the challenge of acting as a chef and feel a great sense of satisfaction when they taste the fruits of their labor.

Fun Things to Do When Bored at Home as a Couple
