How To Hang Curtains Safely And Securely (A Beginners Guide)
Most people would think that hanging curtains is a pretty simple process. You just put them up there, right? In reality, it’s a bit more complicated than that, and it’s important that you get it just right.
You need to make sure that they’re secured properly, and that they’re at just the right height for the style that you’re going for. If you’re looking to hang your new window coverings from Woodyatt Curtains, then read on to find out how to hang them safely and securely.
What you’ll need
Before getting started, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got all the tools and equipment necessary for the job. You’ll need some kind of curtain rod, the brackets to put the rod on the wall, hooks to hang the curtain from the rod, screws, and of course, a curtain.
For tools, you’ll need a spirit level, a measuring tape, a combi drill, a pencil, and potentially some wall plugs. You may also need a stable step ladder, in order to reach high enough; how high this will need to be will depend on the height of your windows.
Decide what style you’re going for
How high and wide you attach the curtain rod will depend on what kind of style you’re going with. Most people choose to hang the rod just a little higher than the window frame, and a few inches to either side.
However, cafe curtains will hang a lot lower, and ceiling height options will go all the way up. There’s no right or wrong answer, as long as you’ve done your research and you’re making an informed decision.
Measure and mark
Next, you’re ready to start measuring and marking with your pencil. If your house is level, and the windows are square with the house, then you can use a spirit level to make sure that the line you’re going for is level as well. Decide where you’re going to attach the rod (typically you’ll place one bracket on either side of the window, and potentially one in the middle as well) and then mark where the screws will go.
Drill and screw
How you’ll attach the brackets will depend slightly on what you’re drilling into. If it’s brick, plaster, or concrete, you’ll need to pre-drill a hole, and then put a wall plug in the hole. If it’s wood, you can likely screw straight into it. Make sure that the screws you’re using are long enough – if they’re too short, when you hang the curtain, it might rip the whole bracket off.
You can then fit the curtain rod into the brackets, centering and then fasting it. Finally, you’re ready to attach the hooks to the curtain, and then put the hooks on the rod. There will likely be a fixture to stop the hooks from slipping off the end of the rod, which you can put on as well.
It isn’t too hard to hang your curtains safely and securely, but you’ll need the right tools and some basic DIY skills. If it seems like too much, you can always get a friend round to help you out with it, or hire a local handy-person.
