5 Steps to Take After a Bicycle Accident
In 2019, a recorded 846 people were killed in traffic crashes. If you ride a bike frequently, your chances of being involved in some sort of bicycle accident are highly likely. While most riders will only experience minor injuries some will not be so lucky.
Keep reading to make sure you’re prepared if you find yourself in a less than ideal scenario during your next commute.
1. Go Somewhere Safe
You must clear the road and get yourself to safety as quickly as possible following a bicyclist accident. If you are in the middle of the road or bike path, you will need to move to the side or you will become a hazard to other cars and bicycles. Nobody would want to get hit a second time.
2. Assess Your Injuries
You may be injured even if you don’t feel anything instantly. You can run through this quick checklist to self-assess your injuries:
- Cuts or gashes
- Dizziness or disorientation
- Full range of motion for all extremities
- Inability to walk
If you feel intense pain or see any obvious injuries, try not to move more than you have to while you wait for help to arrive.
3. Document the Scene of the Bicycle Accident
Make sure to document injuries and damages using your phone’s camera (if it survived the bike crash, of course). Collect contact information for any witnesses and gather the driver’s insurance information if possible.
4. Call 911
It is extremely important to wait for the police and file a report, even if you don’t think you are injured. You may not realize it until hours after the bike accident. Injuries that seem minor can develop into more serious issues.
Some drivers will apologize and verbally admit blame, only to later deny any responsibility. Be wary of any attempts at negotiation with the driver. Once the police get there they can ticket the driver, and that could help you in settling the case with the insurance company.
5. Contact a Lawyer
Bicycle accidents can involve complex legal issues and may require the assistance of a personal injury attorney. You will want to consult with an experienced bicycle accident lawyer who understands and has handled bicycle accidents before.
Do not communicate with the at-fault party’s insurance company or their lawyers before consulting with your attorney. The good news is, most injury cases can be settled without going to trial.
