Sunrise in Durban, South Africa

Good day,

The photo above is of sunrise over Durban, South Africa and was taken moments ago from my balcony at the Oyster Box Hotel. Was happy to see that countless people were already up and at it since the first crack of dawn. Saw people of all ages including single women jogging and walking along the somewhat busy and picturesque board-walk along the coast.

Will note that I saw two people in wetsuits run backwards into the waves. They appeared to have no scuba tanks but did have a buoy of some sort dragging roughly 40 feet behind. Watched them swim a great distance into the ocean before I lost interest and was unable to relocate them.

Early to bed, early to rise makes anyone and everyone healthy, wealthy and wise…

Tips hat,

The ‘wetsuit people’ were most likely free divers – using a buoy of some description to mark their dive site or for ‘safety’ purposes … Free-diving is a terribly unsafe sport/hobby – unfortunately I have heard of countless casualties – both from my career perspective and as a certified PADI diver 🙁

That makes perfect sense. Just couldn’t comprehend why people would do it on this coast, the tide is intense and why they felt the urge to go just before sunset also beats me. That said, maybe they love free diving and had to be at work for 9?

Thanks for shedding some light on these elusive “wetsuit people”.
