Last night was fun, I got to meet yet another one of you dignified SHABL readers. Whenever I meet one of you, I realize what a cool reader base has been built around the “SHABL” mantra. This blog doesn’t cater to the unwashed masses aka the “how to pack your backpack in Berlin” or “How to tie your shoes in Transnistria” market, no. Naturally there isn’t a cheesy photo of us snapping up snappers because well, we don’t get down like that and I respect people’s privacy.
SHABL caters to educated men and women of means who realize life is too short to waste doing things that don’t make them happy and ultimately don’t really matter. Essentially it caters to professionals who kick over their computer screens and scream “YOLO” into their boss’ face before breaking down the door to the life they always wanted. That or people who share the dream and are working tirelessly to get there, even if it’s not quite as drastic a move as mine.
That said, a lot of 18-23 year old girls seem to like us on FB which is totally cool too.
Long story short this Scandinavian gent who used to be a trader for a bank was at a golf tournament in San Jose and needed to come to this area to pick up some kayaks. He messaged me, we started chatting and he ended up coming here and crashing the night at my friend’s house as the place clearly has excess supply.
The funny stuff is when the guy is pulling up, my friend is like “so you’ve done this before right!?” I’m like “What!?” and she says “you know, meet someone from the internet and invite them over” and I replied “oh yeah, sure … Wait, not quite like this … no”. If someone ever told me I’d meet an interesting gent who has now become a C. American “neighborhood friend” in the jungles of Costa Rica through this website I’d of told them they’re crazy.
Countless people are wise enough to realize and brave enough to act on the fact that you only live once. They realize that wasting their life doing things they aren’t passionate about so they can get money to keep doing things that make them unhappy is asinine. This guy has no regrets FYI, has a nice beach home and plays golf 3-4 times a week. Essentially he’s living my original dream before I went out for beers in Bangkok and went on a travel bender for the ages.
In the coming years, hopefully I’ll get a chance to meet many more of you in exotic locations.
P.S: I hope your trip home is a safe one and look forward to a game of golf or just drinking a few more beers.
