Captain Willy’s Big Barracuda Off Little Corn Island

I’ve been busying trying to catch barracudas, to the point of doing internet research which is where I found this. Thus far have caught two of them but neither are particularly photo worthy. On the topic of worthy, watch Captain Willy catch to cook a big barracuda with a hand line off the coast of Little Corn Island.

Tips hat,

P.S: Thanks to whoever filmed this and got around to putting it online and to the photographer of this.

What the hell? An obviously impressive achievement. But I wonder why the fish never made a run…I’ve had barracuda burn line off my reel like it was nothing. Often, when a fish sees a boat at the surface, it turns and heads for the depths. I was waiting for that to occur, and hopefully not see Capt. Willy’s fingers severed in the process. And that fish went stone cold dead after one whack with that stick? Usually it would still be flopping around when hauled over the side of the boat. Hard to prove either way, but I’m a tiny bit skeptical here..

Have you been fishing only from shore for barracuda? I landed a nice one (like the one in this video) with Capt. Alphonso and I landed 3 slightly smaller ones (plus a 35-lb kingfish) with Capt. Elvis during my time on LCI. Elvis is all about trolling for bigger fish. Highly recommended should you wish to lose the shoreline shackles for a day.

    Good luck!

I have no idea except I found the video last night. Thing is, anything can happen and both that I’ve pulled in have been pretty wimpy without a real run. That said, who knows right?

I have been fishing from sea and shore but caught both from shore. I take a small hook on a small line and catch bait, throw it on a big hook with a coke bottle as a floater and let it happen. Started swimming the floater out even further.

Saw a big shark, like my size swim near the point yesterday so we threw a fish head on, nothing took it though.

Quick unrelated question. Are you by any chance staying at the Three brothers guesthouse on Little Corn Island? I’ve been trying to reach them by phone, but no answer. I’m trying to get a reservation from the end of May there, and since they don’t have an e-mail I’m not quite sure what else to do. IF by any chance you are staying there indeed, is there maybe another phone number I could call, or something like that to get in touch with the owners?

Thanks so much, and thanks for this wonderful blog!

Not sure if they do reservations, if you are just one person or so the best bet is to just show up.

Really odd that I just stumbled on this site and checked out the vids and found this ONE I filmed and narrated while on the boat with Captain Willy!!

Here’s the story and what happened that day. Ive fished with Willy many times on LCI and we went out a with a plan to catch kingfish and mahi mahi. Of course we needed some bait and Willy and I jigged with a hand line, we just about had what we needed and Willy was bringin in 1 more bait fish when the Barra grabbed it at the boat. Its was friggin hillarious cause Willy was throwing the handline back in the water!! The barra I assumed pretty much consumed the smallie when Willy looked at me and said “Watch This” With 2 hands he yanked on the hand line and set the hook!! I started filming there!
To answer your skeptism SJH, I dont think the Barra really knew it was hooked at all, and all it took was 1 swing to KO that baby!!!
One of my most memorable moments from Little Corn Island!! And it tasted great in the rundown later on that night!
