Taking a Vacation to Sri Lanka, Ever Been?

Greetings,

This is an update which is also a question. Have you ever been to Sri Lanka for a vacation or holiday? I’m off tomorrow and to be frank, know nothing of the place. Don’t know the currency it uses, conversion, anything. It’s exciting and sorta unnerving.

This is the beginning of a new ‘leg of the journey’.  A journey to places where finding a guest house isn’t like finding a beer at a bamboo beach hut. That said, sure there will be bamboo beach huts.

Sri Lanka is an island south of India. It had some political turmoil in the past but now is supposedly okay. Colombo is the capital and where the only major  airport is.

In current news, they just received record rainfall in the last 18 years, 490mm of rain. 36,000 families are displaced and lots of traffic is messed up due to intersections being flooded or fallen trees.

To make matters worse, the rain is still going. Looking at the forecast it’s going to be rain all week. What a contrast from sunny days on a Thai island? Then again, traveling is about the unknown and the friends you meet in the oddest of circumstances.

Ever been? Heard good things? Things to avoid? I’m all ears and would love some insight if you’ve been lucky enough to visit OR have heard of places worthwhile.

Let us assume the weather is nice, here is a cool video trailer from youtube.

P.S: This should be quite the experience. Thailand and most of SE Asia IS traveling but it’s so organized here that even when alone, it’s almost like you’re on a school trip. This should be interesting.
