It's a well known scam that even the guidebooks warn you about. You can take a train for 50 cents from Bangkok to the border. You then take a tuk tuk (no more than a dollar) to the Cambodian border and can get a visa for $20, unfortunately if you talk to anyone along the way you somehow have to pay US$30-40 so keep your head down and don't talk to anyone. After you cross the border you can get a taxi wherever you need to go for less than the price of the bus. Cambodia is very cool but whatever you do don’t take the bus from Khao San there.
