On the Boat to Big Corn Before Breakfast

Greetings,

The time is 6:04AM and I had better write this quick if I wish to make it to Big Corn Island also just known as Corn Island before breakfast. The air is calm and the birds are singing, the occasional rooster sounds like it’s being strangled and from my window I can view some islanders slaughtering a cow, seriously. Never a dull moment here in this small village, that’s for sure.

Living on the Corn Islands is pretty easy but one of the biggest chores is most certainly the trips to Big Corn. Why do you need to go to Big Corn you ask? Well, basically, for almost everything. Everything comes from Big Corn besides a freight once a week which I still think stops over on Big Corn on the way. End of the day, on an island with no real roads or cars, taking a 7 mile open air speed boat with twin 200’s isn’t the end of the world, is it?

As it happens, there are still no ATM machines on Little Corn Island and the reason is, nobody on the island wants it. I don’t mean they don’t want to have an ATM machine present, I mean nobody wants it in their building, if that makes sense. It’s also a problem that is primarily that of longer term tourists as most bring some cash, spend it and leave. Your average islander doesn’t hit up the ATM too much so why worry?

This wasn’t published before I left due to the ever present technical difficulties which rise my blood pressure like waiting in traffic. That said, this wait is short and coming to an end so I find it easier to endure. In other news it’s hot, I mean stupid hot around here. Some of the islanders I know are even mentioning / lamenting the heat and these girls I know fried an egg on the sidewalk, seriously.
