Heritage Golf Club on the Domaine de Bel Ombre, Mauritius
I’m writing this mid-afternoon when most vacationers would be relaxing with a cold one by the pool. I’m no fool and will join them shortly but sometimes there are things that need to be said like what I’m about to tell you… I just finished one of the most ridiculous and relaxing rounds of my life at Heritage Golf Club on the Domaine de Bel Ombre in south-west Mauritius. This golf course could best be described as “easy on the eyes” and firm but fair to play if you get the right lies…
The golf club is part of Heritage Resorts which is the group that runs Le Telfair where I’m staying and Awali where I partook in some good old fashion fun last night with a few new friends. The course stretches over 100 hectares where every hole is unique in an exotic setting which leads to an unforgettable round. The conditions were just immaculate with a challenging course layout. It ranged from water hazards to doglegs, to doglegs with bunkers and water hazards to drastic elevation changes.
I played alone the first half to do my best capturing the essence of the place. The second half was decidedly more social with two gents from the UK. Playing golf alone is good times but meeting new people and shooting the breeze with them is a large part of the allure. Golf isn’t about keeping score or worrying about how far you hit your 7 iron; it’s about having a leisurely stroll through well kept grounds with fine company, yes?
As you start to approach the far end of the course on the front 9 you’re able to overlook the entire property with the sea as a bold blue backdrop. It’s also quite windy which helps keep you cool but also wreaks havoc on even the most well thought out and struck approach shots. There are numerous villas lining the fairways and some of them could best be described as awe inspiring.
The course wasn’t too busy which was quite nice, I dare say. That said, it’s not high season right now and sorta in-between which is a real perk for those who like to play at their own pace. It’s also winter here in the Mauritius which means that the temperature was was warm but not hot and if you combine that with the steady sea breeze, perfect golfing temperatures. I’ll also mention that it’s unlimited complimentary rounds for all guests of the resort and every cart has a GPS in it.
After the round I met my new friends and their wives at the always enjoyable 19th hole. We shared stories of sorts and just kicked back with cold ones. Following that I met up with a distinguished gent named Avinash who is the assistant professional at Heritage Golf Club and we made our way to the driving range. He gave me a quick lesson which is already delivering dividends. Golf is a sport where small changes can yield big results so solid advice should always be welcome.
Now it’s time to wrap this up as the sun is shining and the weather is sweet. There are interesting people from around the world enjoying the facilities and the only reasonable thing to do is go out there and get in the mix. I realize that we’re all on borrowed time but I’m leaving Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort tomorrow so it’s time to literally soak in as much of this scene as humanly possible before leaving, yes?
In closing, this #MyMauritius blog trip was created and managed by the fine people at iambassador and AHRIM in association with the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority and Air Mauritius. I’d like to thank them for the invitation to partake in this campaign; I’m thrilled to be on the island.
