Grizzly Bear Encounter in Khutzeymateen Inlet, BC
Greetings,
Today we had the distinct pleasure of visiting Palmerville Adventures in Khutzeymateen Inlet, British Columbia which is in the heart of grizzly bear habitat. The floating lodge offers a grizzly bear experience and is run by a gent named Greg who has been living in the area his whole life. About half way into the tour we came across this 7 year old male just grazing what felt like 15-20 feet away but in reality may have been further but who knows?! I’ll be posting a full video soon but wanted to give you an idea of what it was like.
What’s grizzly about these bears is that this gent was small compared to one of the “Barnacle Brothers” who is 34 years old, 1000 pounds and about to gain another 300 when the salmon start running. He’ll be making a cameo in the upcoming video, rest assured. Suffice to say the weather was perfect and we were lucky as when it comes to wildlife, you’ll never know unless you go. This gent I met from the Yukon who has been staying at the lodge the last few days said in all the tours he has done this is the closest.
Very fun experience from start to finish, including the flight from Prince Rupert.

I can barely…BEARLY make out what I am looking at. You couldn’t have walked up for a closer shot?
I tried but we had to stay in the boat, next time.
That is terrifying. I really love bears but if you can get close enough to film them then, in my opinion, you are too close.
I’ve been loving these post on BC Rob. I think you’ve just about convinced me to move there.
It’s great times, I used to want to move to Vancouver but naturally that never happened, glad to get to visit.
Something about bears is really terrifying. I think it’s maybe cause people always seem to stumble upon them, as opposed to, say, being tracked by a lion pride on a safari in Africa. There just so much more cumbersome looking and unpredictable, it actually makes them scarier to me than something like lions.
Maybe it’s just me, but that’s the way I see it. The bear mace never left my side when I was camping in the Tetons, I can tell you that much!
If they know you’re around they’ll usually leave, it’s the stumble upon that also makes sure I’m not too quiet.
So awesome. I think I’d rather encounter a bear than a mountain lion / cougar, at least.
We saw a big black bear today and will agree with you.
I finally got to watch this video… crazy… you really weren’t that far from the bear. Can’t imagine having to outrun a bear! Glad you didn’t have to!
It was quite the experience, would love to see them fish salmon.

You do, also to do some fishing. Greg aka the gent who runs Palmerville has recently caught some 100lbs halibut off the dock.
Wow! I can’t believe you were that close! This has become a once in a lifetime trip for sure!! That bear is small? Looks pretty big and scary to me!
It’s small compared to this other one we saw, videos to come and a total trip of a lifetime!
